Professur (W3)
Technische Universität Braunschweig is one of Germany’s leading institutes of technology and offers an inspiring work environment with a wide range of research and teaching opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities. The 3,800 members of our academic, technical and administrative staff – including more than 400 international scientific staff – work together to ensure that our university successfully fulfils its mission of providing excellent teaching for our approximately 16,000 students and 100 trainees.
We focus our research on mobility, metrology, engineering for health, and the future city. Our core disciplines include a comprehensive engineering division and a strong natural sciences division, closely linked with business sciences, social sciences, educational sciences, and the humanities.
Our university is located at the heart of one of Europe’s most research-intensive regions. We cooperate closely with the more than 20 internationally renowned research institutions in our vicinity and our network extends to our partner universities in Germany and all over the world, with whom we maintain strong relationships.
DLR is the aerospace research center of the Federal Republic of Germany. We conduct research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy and transport, civil security and defence, as well as digitalisation. The German Space Agency at DLR plans and implements the national space programme on behalf of the federal government. Two DLR project management agencies oversee funding programmes and support the transfer of knowledge. Climate, mobility and technology are changing globally. DLR uses the expertise of its institutes and facilities to develop solutions to these challenges. It develops technologies for a sustainable future and contributes to strengthening Germany as a centre of knowledge and business through technology transfer.
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technische Universität Braunschweig and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are looking for a scientist in a joint appointment procedure (Jülich model) as a
University Professor (W3) and Director Rail System Technology, Co-Director of the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems (f/m/x)
At the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems with sites in Braunschweig and Berlin, the institute's directorate is to be filled as part of two joint appointment procedures (Jülich model) between DLR and Technische Universität Braunschweig. The aim of this procedure is to recruit a university professor to represent the field of rail system technology. Another procedure, which will be advertised at the same time, will focus on appointing a person for the area of road system technology. The future holder of the position of Director Rail System Technology will be appointed to the Technische Universität Braunschweig and at the same time be given leave of absence in order to take over the management of the Institute of Transportation Systems in the form of a co-directorship with reduced teaching duties (two semester hours per week) at the DLR together with the future Director Road System Technology. The Institute is to be managed and organised primarily from the Braunschweig site in a collegial manner. The appointment is planned for the earliest possible date.
The DLR Institute of Transportation Systems, located at the DLR sites Braunschweig and Berlin, conducts research on technologies to increase safety, efficiency and user-orientation for a sustainable transport system. As part of the DLR strategy, the institute is integrated into the Transport programme with a focus on the automation and networking of traffic processes, road and rail vehicles and intermodal transport. Within the network of DLR institutes from the research areas of aeronautics, space, energy, transport and their cross-cutting topics, civil security and defence research as well as digitalisation, the Institute of Transportation Systems is making significant technological contributions to the transformation of mobility. In future, the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems will use the full synergy potential of the institute with its two application domains "Road System Technology" and "Rail System Technology" while maintaining the research topic intermodal traffic management. A new management structure is therefore to be established for the directorate of the Institute of Transportation Systems, which will be divided into the two main areas road system technology and rail system technology. The two simultaneously advertised professorships form the interface between DLR and the Technische Universität Braunschweig and are embedded in the Lower Saxony Research Centre for Automotive Engineering (NFF), which coordinates and initiates internal and inter-university collaborations. An active, leading role is expected with regard to joint research between DLR, NFF and other institutes of the Technische Universität Braunschweig. The professorships will each be affiliated to one of the institutes specialising in Automotive Engineering and Mobile Systems.
Your tasks

Director Rail System Technology, Co-Director of the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems
Your tasks will be to make technological contributions to the transformation of mobility with a focus on digital rail, railway operations, control-command and signalling. The focus is on the automation of rail operations and the monitoring of infrastructures as well as the development of standards and new methods for the approval of components and systems. Your research will comprise the acquisition of data and information on operational processes in rail transport and their modelling in cooperation with operators and users. The institute develops new technical solutions for intelligent rail transport as well as intermodal traffic management in a digital and networked transport system. For this purpose, it has extensive laboratories and test facilities such as RailSiTe and RailDriVE for conformity tests in the field of control and safety technology as well as access to test tracks.
The lecturing (2 SWS) imparts specialized knowledge in the field of rail system technology with application reference to traffic engineering, traffic control technology and system technology for new mobility.
