For our location in Zeuthen we are seeking:
Remuneration Group 8 | Unlimited | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: APMA013/2024 | Deadline: 28.02.2025 | Full-time/Part-time
DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
The Zeuthen location of DESY has a strong focus on astroparticle and particle physics (gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy, and collider particle physics). The experimental groups are accompanied by a strong theory group. DESY Zeuthen is responsible for developing and delivering detectors for astroparticle and particle physics experiments, and is actively engaged in R&D for future applications. Together with the Centre for Quantum Technology and Applications (CQTA), DESY Zeuthen is taking a leading role in applying quantum technology to challenges in particle and astroparticle physics.
The post holder will contribute to the research by producing high-quality detector components with integrated quality control, for example by contributing to the pipelined production of ATLAS ITk silicon modules, and by assembling, testing and characterizing the modules. The post holder will be required to develop and maintain diagnostic and test equipment for detector research and development (e.g. X-ray system, microscopy, climate chamber). In addition to silicon detector construction and testing, the work will emphasize electrical systems, for example in the development of electrical instruments for the control and feedback of quantum sensor experiments (e.g. monitoring of beamlines and vacuum systems, ARTIQ/Sinara), but work on mechanical and other systems will also be required (e.g. vacuum, cryogenic, and laser systems). In parallel, the post holder will contribute to the research group by developing, commissioning and maintaining the research laboratories for silicon detectors and quantum sensors, and by attending and presenting in meetings (local and international), and will serve to coordinate between the DESY workshops, Campus development groups and similar structures at the Humboldt University Institute of Physics.
- Production of high-quality detector components: assembly, testing and electrical characterization of ATLAS silicon modules, develop and maintain mechanical and electrical test equipment for detector R&D and for experiments based on quantum sensing
- Laboratory/Team duties: construction and maintenance of research laboratories for silicon detectors and quantum sensors
- Communication with vendors and research team in meetings (also international), coordination with DESY workshops & campus groups, and similar groups at Humboldt University Physics (occasional travel to support off-site projects)
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.
