We are preparing for “Technical Assistance for the development of eco-tourism in Malawi fundned by the EU". The overall objective of the project is To contribute to Malawi’s sustainable development of the ecotourism sector. The TA will provide technical support to the Ministry of Tourism and relevant stakeholders.
The project aims to support the development of ecotourism in Malawi. Malawi's variety of natural resources and attractions make the country an ideal tourist destination. Developing this potential creates strong opportunities for economic growth, increase of foreign exchange earnings, job creation in rural areas, as well as for preserving the country’s natural and cultural heritage.
The Team Leader will work with project stakeholders in Malawi, the European Union Delegation, local enterprises, and especially rural communities to achieve project objectives. S/he will develop project strategy, build and lead an effective team, and achieve project objectives, including the folllowing:
- Develop and implement a strategy for ecotourism development in Malawi
- Identify and promote ecotourism investment opportunities
- Enhance the capacity of local communities to manage and own ecotourism ventures
- Develop, certify, and grade ecotourism products and services
- Improve institutional capacities at all levels for coordinating ecotourism development
- Strengthen research in the field of ecotourism
- Enhance information management systems for ecotourism
- Engage in brand building and enhance access to local and international source markets
Qualifications and skills
- Master’s degree in any of the following: tourism planning and management, sustainable tourism, ecotourism or tourism resource conservation and management, hospitality management, travel and tourism management, or a relevant, directly related discipline;
- Fluent in English (at least C1 level; Language levels are defined for understanding, speaking and writing skills by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages available at https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/resources/european-language-levels-cefr and should be demonstrated by certificates or by past relevant experience).
General professional experience
- Must have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience working with government ministries or agencies, and with private sector organisations and companies, and with international partners in the context of development cooperation, in the tourism or natural resources management sectors.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as Team Leader.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in programme management related to development cooperation (donor funded programmes aimed at contributing to the eradication of poverty, economic, social and sustainable development and environmental protection) in the tourism or natural resources management sectors.
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in providing technical assistance for public authorities or agencies in developing countries on tourism development policy, planning, management, preferably with a focus on ecotourism.
- Previous experience managing EU funded projects is an asset;
Specific professional experience
- Must have demonstrable experience in conducting research. I.e. provide a record of success in at least 3 research studies that briefly explain the purpose, methods, results, and implications of the study, as well as the challenges and limitations that were faced. Those with experience in tourism or ecotourism research will have an added advantage,
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience implementing tourism and/or natural resource related projects benefiting local communities,
- Must have experience in any of these areas : ecotourism standards and certification; or in tourism statistics.
- Experience of working in Southern African Development Community (SADC) or East African Community (EAC) tourism destinations is an asset.
Geographical coverage will be national with consultancy activities being coordinated from Lilongwe, Malawi.
