What to expect:
The Institute for AI Safety and Security provides research and development services in the field of AI-related methods, processes, algorithms and execution environments. The focus is on ensuring safety and security for AI-based solutions in ambitious application classes. “Safety and security by design” is a central aspect in this context, since it directly supports future requirements of safety-critical applications that are based on AI or integrate AI-based components.
Main Research Areas of the Institute for AI Safety and Security are:
  • development processes and methods for safety-critical AI applications
  • robust and reliable approaches to safeguard AI methods and algorithms
  • safety and security in the context of AI-based applications
  • management and use of sensitive data
  • execution environments for AI-based applications
  • innovative computation methods.
In the Institute’s focus area of AI Engineering you work on innovative development processes and methods as well as technologies and execution environments for the implementation of safety-critical AI-based applications. In particular, in domains like aviation, space, energy and transport, those contributions are of high relevance. By an in-depth analysis of current development processes for safety-critical applications you identify requirements for suitable AI methods and technologies as well as their execution environments in the context of safety-critical applications. The according improvement of AI methods/technologies and execution environments will be realized by joint activities with experts from other research areas of the Institute for AI Safety and Security or external research and development partners. Based on this, you are responsible for the instantiation of demonstrators which allow the critical reflection of results and gained insights within practically relevant applications as well as test and assessment procedures.
To visualize complex use-cases in the field of automated mobility and logistics facilities, various demonstrators will be created in virtual reality (VR) with aspects of augmented reality (AR). To support the demonstrators, we are looking for a dedicated student assistant (m/f/d) with a focus on the creation of 3D assets and programming in the VR/AR environment.
The work is divided into the following tasks:
  • creation of 3D assets: Design and modelling of 3D objects and environments using Blender, which are used in VR/AR demonstrators
  • implementation and integration: Integration of the created 3D assets in VR/AR environments using the Godot game engine
  • programming of VR/AR functionalities: Development of simple scripts and functions in Godot to control VR/AR interactions and support the overall design
  • support in the development and optimization of VR/AR demonstrators: Collaboration in the planning, design and implementation of virtual application scenarios for autonomous mobility and logistics solutions
  • testing and debugging: Carrying out tests to ensure the functionality and performance of VR/AR demonstrators; troubleshooting and optimizing applications
What we expect from you:
  • enrolled student of computer science, game design or a related degree program, e.g. in the field of visual computing
  • good knowledge in the creation of 3D assets with Blender
  • basic programming skills in Python, C++ or C# and initial practical experience in developing applications in VR/AR environments
  • high motivation and willingness to familiarize yourself with new technologies and tools
  • good written and spoken English, knowledge of German is an advantage
  • initial experience in working with game engines such as Godot, Unity and/or Unreal Engine is a plus
  • knowledge of other 3D and VR/AR design tools and software is a plus
  • experience with the integration of 3D assets in VR/AR applications is an advantage
  • basic knowledge in the development of user interfaces (UI/UX) for VR/AR environments is an advantage
  • ideally creativity, interest in innovative technologies and enthusiasm for the areas of automated mobility and logistics
  • ideally interest in Generative AI and initial practical experience
