For our Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven we are looking for
Student physics, electrical engineering, marine engineering or similar (f/m/x)
Thesis Master/Bachelor in the field of optical underwater systems
What to expect:
Are you enthusiastic about the latest technology and the maritime world? Then the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures offers you exactly the right environment to complete your Master's or Bachelor's thesis. The "Sensor” team develops innovative optical technologies and is looking for student support with a hands-on mentality and enthusiasm for hardware-related, experimental work in the underwater sector.
Specifically, your work will centre around a range-gated camera system. Based on a nanosecond pulsed LED spotlight in synchronisation with an extremely fast camera, the system allows for improved visibility in turbid waters such as the North and Baltic Seas.
Your thesis will allow you to familiarise yourself with the latest camera technology (single photon imaging), time-of-flight systems, underwater system integration and the physics of light propagation in natural waters. Depending on your interests, skills and background, you can focus on different areas:
  • Optimisation of a nanosecond pulsed LED spotlight for combination with a single-photon camera (SPAD) to create a gated viewing system. Characterisation of the system in the laboratory and possibly in the field.
  • Realisation and evaluation of multispectral multiple scattering measurements (point spread function) in the field. Analysis of the influence of scattering on underwater image formation.
  • Hardware and software optimisation of the camera system for automatic operation from the institute's own ROV and/or AUV.
What we expect from you:
  • Ongoing Master's or Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering, marine engineering, robotics or similar
  • Hands-on mentality and willingness to carry out experiments in the field
  • Good written and spoken English skills
  • Knowledge of optoelectronics and conducting laboratory experiments is an advantage
