Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute for AI Safety and Security in Sankt Augustin we are looking for
Student of informatics, mathematics, physics, engineering science or similar (f/m/x)
Setting up an immersive motion simulator
What to expect:
The Institute for AI Safety and Security provides research and development services in the field of AI-related methods, processes, algorithms and execution environments. The focus is on ensuring safety and security for AI-based solutions in ambitious application classes. “Safety and security by design” is a central aspect in this context, since it directly supports future requirements of safety-critical applications that are based on AI or integrate AI-based components.
Main Research Areas of the Institute for AI Safety and Security are:
  • Development processes and methods for safety-critical AI applications
  • Robust and reliable approaches to safeguard AI methods and algorithms
  • Safety and security in the context of AI-based applications
  • Management and use of sensitive data
  • Execution environments for AI-based applications
  • Innovative computation methods
In the Institute’s focus area of AI Engineering you work on innovative development processes and methods as well as technologies and execution environments for the implementation of safety-critical AI-based applications. In particular, in domains like aviation, space, energy and transport, those contributions are of high relevance. By an in-depth analysis of current development processes for safety-critical applications you identify requirements for suitable AI methods and technologies as well as their execution environments in the context of safety-critical applications. The according improvement of AI methods/technologies and execution environments will be realized by joint activities with experts from other research areas of the Institute for AI Safety and Security or external research and development partners. Based on this, you are responsible for the instantiation of demonstrators which allow the critical reflection of results and gained insights within practically relevant applications as well as test and assessment procedures.
A central goal of our institute is to set up a laboratory environment in Sankt Augustin and Ulm. Part of this research environment is an immersive motion simulator that stands on a free-moving Stewart platform. Serial and parallel kinematics ensure the platform is positioned in six lines of freedom. Combining the six axes enables a realistic dynamic movement experience in aviation, aerospace, and motorsport simulators. The goal is to use this platform as a demonstrator for the simulation environments developed at the institute.
The work is divided into the following tasks:
  • development and programming of an own SDK to control the simulator in Python & C/C++
  • analysing the adaptation of existing plug-ins and sample codes
  • creation of AI use cases and connection of the motion simulator to robotics platforms
  • connection of the motion simulator to simulation environments for autonomous driving/flying
  • documentation of the simulator interfaces
What we expect from you:
  • completed bachelor's degree in informatics, mathematics, physics or engineering science
  • experience in programming (C/C++, Python)
  • good written and spoken English knowledge
  • structured and independent work
  • knowledge of the OSI layer model desired
  • ideally experience in programming custom UDP packages
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
