Simulation of quantum mechanical systems
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute of Materials Research in Cologne we are looking for
Student Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or similar (f/m/x)
Master Thesis “Theoretical Methods for Hybrid Quantum Simulation of non-Adiabatic Molecular Dynamics”
What to expect:
One of the most promising current applications of quantum computing is the simulation of quantum mechanical systems. Accurate simulations of molecular and material properties are not only fascinating from a theoretical perspective, but are also of great industrial interest. While there is currently a large focus on quantum algorithms for calculating static properties, such as energies of ground and excited states, simulations of dynamic processes have received relatively little attention.
The basic aim of this thesis is the implementation of hybrid algorithms for the simulation of molecular dynamics, in which the nuclear structure is considered classically and only the electronic structure is propagated on the quantum computer (see Ehrenfest method, Hellman-Feynman forces, etc.). After implementing known methods for model systems (e.g., Shin-Mitsu model, H2) in the first part of the thesis, new and innovative approaches will be tested and compared with already known methods. Different fermion-to-qubit mappings as well as lattice encodings in first and second quantization will be compared. In addition to a technical aptitude for these activities, a strong ability to work in a team is also expected.
The thesis will be doubly supervised by a physicist with extensive expertise in quantum simulation of dynamical processes, who will instruct the algorithmic part of the thesis, and a chemical engineer with many years of experience in classical simulation of non-adiabatic molecular dynamics, who will be available to advise on applications. The thesis will be supervised and carried out in English.
What we expect from you:
  • Security clearance as well as the willingness to security clearance pursuant to §§ 8 ff. Security Clearance Act (SÜG) is a condition for employment at DLR
  • Ongoing Master studies in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or Chemistry
  • Familiarity with the use of Python
  • Extensive knowledge in the field of quantum mechanics
  • Basic knowledge on quantum computer is beneficial but not necessary
  • Knowledge of German and very good knowledge of written and spoken English
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
