Course paper/final thesis, Student placement, Internship
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen we are looking for a
Student in Engineering, Physics, Information Technology or similar (f/m/x)
Design, automatization and testing of an optical link setup
What to expect:
At DLR we are developing miniaturized optical communication terminals. These terminals have many advantages over the traditional radiofrequency systems: higher data rates, miniaturization, security, few regulations, …
One of our newest developments is the project CubeISL where 2 satellites will be tested in space in 2026. It is based on past projects that are currently operating in space, like OSIRIS4CubeSat. Its main goal is transferring the technology of laser communications from direct-to-Earth (Space to ground) towards intersatellite links between two CubeSats.
On CubeISL we are currently testing the acquisition and tracking procedure between the two CubeSats. The purpose of this work is to design the hardware and automatize the software to create a permanent link setup that allows us to test the CubeISL terminal with it. For this position a multidisciplinary knowledge is encouraged (mechanical, optical, electronical, software, and their interfaces). Once this is finished, we will proceed to perform tests using the link infrastructure between the two CubeSats.
What would your task be in CubeISL?
Your working student position/internship/thesis will consist on designing the necessary hardware based on existing hardware that we have in-house. Followed by automating the hardware so that it can be operated remotely and pointed accurately toward the terminal that we would operate in our premises. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment, develop and work with hardware that will fly to space, and help establish the new state-of-the-art in optical communications with CubeSats.
Of course, we don’t expect you to come with all the necessary knowledge to build an optical-communication CubeSat. But with time, we would like you to be motivated to learn and assist as much as possible during the integration, testing, and qualification process.
Some of the tasks that you would be doing are:
  • operate and integrate mechanical, optical and electrical components
  • measure and characterize the performance of optical and mechanical subsystems
  • test a fully integrated satellite communication terminal
  • program rotatory and goniometric to simulate real space scenarios and demonstrate optical links between two terminals
  • automate scripts to allow remote testing with the designed hardware
  • ensure laser safety standards for the permanent link setup
  • write reports about the conducted tests
What we expect from you:
  • extensive multidisciplinary skills
  • extensive experience with hardware projects at university, past working positions, or as part of hobbies
  • experience working in a laboratory with delicate equipment and following safety guidelines
  • basic knowledge designing mechanical and optical systems is a plus
  • basic experience with Python and programming
  • knowledge of orbital dynamics and space environment will be evaluated positively
  • interest in optical communications
  • motivation to build and test a system that will fly to space
  • ability to work independently and in a team
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
