Student placement Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place! For our Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen we are looking for a Student Electrical Engineering, Physics, Information Technology (f/m/x) UAV-Based Sensor Fusion for Accurate Forest Fire Smoke Modeling What to expect: Rotary UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are suitable platforms for monitoring rapidly evolving processes such as forest fires. Once smoke is dense enough to be captured on camera, the visual and infrared sensors on a drone can help gather vital information about a fire at scales much smaller than satellites can.
This project aims to use the visual and infrared sensor information from a flying drone to track the intensity and position of active fire fronts. You will write an interface from the smoke model to reality – based on the model’s information, where should smoke appear in the camera sensors? This output will then be compared with segmentation maps, which identify areas with high smoke concentrations, and we’ll implement a corrective mechanism for the smoke model. Some experiments with UAVs are planned.
What we expect from you:
