Course paper/final thesis, Student placement
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute of Networked Energy Systems in Stuttgart we are looking for a
Student electrical engineering, energy technology, physics or similar (f/m/x)
Master thesis: „Considering Frequency Stability in Energy System Planning“
What to expect:
The Institute for Networked Energy Systems employs around 185 people at its sites in Oldenburg and Stuttgart. With its departments of Urban and Residential Technologies, Energy Systems Technology and Energy Systems Analysis, it is dedicated to system-technical and system-analytical issues concerning the intelligent and efficient coupling of the electricity, heat, industry and transport sectors.

The Energy Systems Analysis department pursues the goal of enabling the optimal design of energy systems with high shares of renewable energies by providing detailed orientation knowledge. The Energy Systems Modelling group is dedicated to the analysis of energy systems transformation pathways in high spatial and temporal resolution, the further methodological development of energy systems models and the identification and open provision of data for these models.
Transmission system operators only consider system stability using dynamic models after the bulk capacities are planned by an energy system model. In the research project STAWESOM, we question this sequential approach. One possibility for considering frequency stability in the energy system model is the addition of constraints related to the system inertia. Your mission is laying the groundwork for that!
You will extend an energy system optimization model implemented in the algebraic modelling language GAMSPy as well as PyPSA-Eur, an open data set of the European energy system. Your extensions allow considering frequency stability in the model, e. g. by adding new constraints and investment opportunities. Thereby, you contribute to the planning of a future European energy system that is more robust to contingencies.
Together with our research team you will formulate and parametrize the model as well as solve it on our high-performance computing infrastructure. Your work will contribute substantially to the project STAWESOM, a joint project between the DLR and the Institute for Combustion and Power Plant Technology (IFK) of the University of Stuttgart.
If you are looking for a hot research topic with many possibilities for acquiring new, transferable skills, you have come to the right place!
What we expect from you:
  • You are studying electrical engineering, energy technology, physics, or a related discipline
  • You ideally have experience in formulating optimization problems and programming, preferably using Python
  • You have a strong analytical mindset, show initiative and are a good communicator
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
