Course paper/final thesis, internship
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute of Flight Systems in Braunschweig we are looking for a
Student aerospace/electrical engineering, computer science or similar (f/m/x)
Drone Detection on RGB and Event-Camera Sensor Data
What to expect:
The Institute of Flight Systems is developing new concepts and technologies for autonomous unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The ability to detect and track other aircraft is fundamental for autonomous UAS missions. The institute is currently researching new perception technologies for more intelligent and safe autonomous systems.
Event-cameras are a cutting-edge technology that can detect and record events at over 10,000 frames per second, made possible by the camera's ability to detect and record only the changes in the scene, rather than capturing a complete image. This research proposal aims to explore the possibilities of using RGB cameras with event-cameras for the task of object detection in a highly dynamic sensor platform. By combining the strengths of both technologies, additional information about the object's appearance and behavior can be observed.
Your task is to investigate and implement possible solutions for the following goals:
  • literature research on sensor fundamentals and related works
  • evaluate calibration methods for RGB and Event cameras
  • develop methodologies to detect and track drones from combined sensor data
What we expect from you:
  • currently enrolled in university scientific studies in the field of aerospace/electrical engineering, computer science, or other comparable field of study
  • good communication and cooperation skills
  • proficiency in English language (spoken and written)
  • enthusiasm, motivation and creativity
  • good expertise in object oriented software development with C++ and Python
  • previous contact with machine leaning frameworks (e.g. Pytorch, Tensorflow, Caffe, …)
  • experience with image processing methods (e.g. OpenCV)
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
Further information:
Starting date: 1 December 2024
Duration of contract: 6 months
Type of employment: full time (part time possible)
Remuneration: up to German TVöD 5
