For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Senior scientist in low-level radio frequency systems design and operation

Remuneration Group 14 | Limited: 3 years | Starting date: 01.10.2024 | ID: MMA044/2024 | Deadline: open | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The group MSK is responsible for the controls, feedback regulations and synchronisation of the particle accelerators at DESY. We are an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists who develop, install and operate complex instruments for the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser, FLASH and the storage ring PETRA III. The low-level radio frequency (LLRF) group at MSK designs, installs, operates, maintains and upgrades LLRF systems of the accelerators operating at DESY and at other partner laboratories. The research topics of the LLRF group include state-of-the-art field detection, resonance control, RF diagnostics and beam control. The development work is done in collaboration with other groups at MSK to exploit the distributed expertise in RF and digital designs, beam diagnostics, optical synchronisation, modern control techniques including artificial intelligence-based designs up to their hardware, firmware and software implementation.

About your role:

  • Leading role in the LLRF R&D effort for the European High Duty Cycle (HDC) upgrade programme
  • Leading the LLRF research to design state-of-the art resonance controls of narrow bandwidth superconducting cavities, including detuning computation, microphonic noise cancellation, bandwidth detection and performance monitoring, in particular in the case of long RF pulse and continuous wave operation
  • Supervision of one postdoc and one to two PhD students performing research for the topics cited above
  • Possible collaboration with industrial partners to work on efficient operation of high power sources
  • Planning research activities, scheduling and organising the LLRF tests at the cryomodule tests facilities, or at user facilities (EuXFEL) during dedicated study times
  • Reporting on results at progress review meetings, workshops or international conferences
  • Guiding the integration of newly demonstrated results into the LLRF system currently operating at XFEL (software, firmware upgrade)
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

Limited: 3 years

About you:

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or related field or equivalent expertise, skills and experience
  • PhD degree and/or several years of experience in an accelerator research facility
  • Senior scientist in LLRF systems, including their designs and operation at accelerator facilities
  • Expertise in control systems, feedback controller designs and optimisation
  • Expertise in electromagnetic field and resonance control of narrow bandwidth superconducting cavities
  • Strong motivation and pragmatism towards problem solving as well as teamwork skills
  • Highly proficient English skills
