Postdoctoral Research position: Novel ultrafast imaging of molecules with strong-field lasers

Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 2 + 2 years | Starting date: 01.01.2025 | ID: FSPO005/2024 | Deadline: 31.10.2024 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

We are delighted to offer a Postdoctoral Research position based at DESY (Hamburg, Germany) in the group led by Prof. A. Trabattoni, whose research focuses on the photo-induced electron dynamics in matter. The position is founded through the ERC starting grant SoftMeter (Multi-messenger soft-field spectroscopy of molecular electronics at interfaces). The project aims to employ strong-field lasers and achieve a novel regime of ultrafast imaging of complex molecules and molecular interfaces. In particular, we want to combine ultrashort ultraviolet pulses and few-cycle infrared pulses to trigger a new regime of high-harmonic generation and laser-induced electron diffraction, with laser intensities that are much lower than conventional strong field photo-interactions. This achievement would open up the possibility of performing noninvasive ultrafast imaging of complex systems with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution. Join our dynamic and forward-thinking team, where you will have the opportunity to work alongside world-class researchers and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries at the forefront of attosecond science and molecular imaging!

About your role:

  • Perform time-resolved experiments with cutting-edge ultrafast pump-probe setups using strong-field lasers
  • Perform advanced laser spectroscopy of photo-induced electron dynamics in molecules
  • Develop innovative data analysis protocols and collaborate with theory research groups
  • Co-supervise a team of Doctoral candidates and undergraduate students
  • Contribute to the dissemination of scientific knowledge by publishing research findings in esteemed peer-reviewed international journals
  • Participate in scientific conferences and symposiums, presenting research results to the global scientific community, fostering collaboration, and exchanging ideas
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

Limited: 2 + 2 years

About you:

  • Ph.D. in physics or a relevant field
  • Experience in ultrafast laser science and/or strong-field physics, and/or attosecond science and/or molecular spectroscopy
  • Strong background in ultrafast lasers, time-resolved spectroscopy, and high-harmonic generation
  • Experience in time-resolved measurements, charge particles/photons detection, and vacuum beamline development

For further information please contact Prof. Andrea Trabattoni at +49 40 8998-6048 (andrea.trabattoni@desy.de).

Please submit your complete application documents (letter of motivation, CV, list of publications, relevant certificates and three letters of references). Please use our online tool for the submission of the letters of reference: Additional application documents

We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
