Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology in Cochstedt we are looking for
Physicist, Mechanical or Aerospace engineer or comparable (f/m/x)
Overall coordination & assessment of measured and simulated data of flying vehicles
What to expect:
The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology at DLR is a leading research institute in the fields of aircraft aerodynamics, aircraft aeroacoustics and space aerothermodynamics. We are offering you a position in a new team on the topic of "Advance Air Mobility Noise". You will be integrated into the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology in Göttingen in disciplinary and technical terms. You will work at the Cochstedt site.
For decades, DLR has been investigating the noise generated during approach and departure of conventional transport aircraft. Large databases of measurements from wind tunnel and flyover measurements are available, models for the simulation of noise generation are available, ranging from very low-up to high-fidelity. Based on this extensive expertise, existing knowledge and models are now being transferred and applied to investigate airtaxis and drones. Extensive measurement campaigns, that are essential to build up a knowledge and data base are planned on the flight-test field operated by DLR in Cochstedt with the infrastructure for noise measurements of flying vehicles ranging from large transport aircraft, to airtaxis, and down to small drones. The unique location of this test field promises excellent conditions for acoustic noise measurement campaigns of these novel vehicles. Dedicated new methods and approaches will be investigated in order to capture the noise signatures and sound sources of these vehicles. All this will be addressed in a new project of DLR starting in January 2025. DLR is recruiting engineers for this team covering all relevant aspects and disciplines, i. e., noise measurements with single microphones and microphone arrays, noise simulation from numerical to semi-empirical methods, and overall assessment of the situation.
With the topic "Advance Air Mobility Noise" you can expect a challenging and exciting field of research in which you can work in a highly professional environment and utilise and improve DLR's simulation capabilities. Further details can be found in the following general job description:
  • Assessment of existing noise source models and their ranking along typical flight procedures; understand underlying theories behind flight operation and noise generation of drones and E-VTOL; obtain expert knowledge about simulation tools; improve and update existing models; exploit available experimental data for model improvement and simulation benchmark activities; derive potential noise mitigation measures based on simulation data base
  • Coordinate, support and execute flight tests; data transfer from measurements to input for simulation exercises; coordinate with colleagues from simulation to enable benchmark activities; derive potential noise mitigation measures based on experimental data base
  • Improvement of flight simulation module within the conceptual design process; validation of the modified simulation process with available experimental data; setup and operation of overall simulation process (immission); coordination of team and experiments; derived potential noise mitigation measures based on overall scenario assessment (immission)
  • Documentation of results in scientific papers / journals and presentations at international conferences / workshops. Active participation in noise measurement campaigns and international simulation benchmark activities.
What we expect from you:
  • MSc (or equivalent) or PhD in physics, mechanical/aerospace engineering or comparable
  • knowledge and experience in acoustics, aircraft design, flight simulation, multidisciplinary optimization, simulation (programming skills), and/or experimental work
  • Experience in conducting simulations and/or experiments
  • Knowledge in validation and uncertainty quantification of simulation results
  • Work experience in scientific/academic environment (education, publication)
  • Experience in guiding and advising scientific staff (students, employees, PhDs)
  • Willingness to carry out a background check in accordance with Section 7 of the Aviation Security Act
  • Fluent English in speaking and writing, basic German language skills are advantageous
  • High level of motivation, good communication skills and team spirit are essential
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
