Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our institute Quantum Technologies  in Ulm we are looking for a
Physicist, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer (m/f/x)
Design, implementation and characterization of high-precision laser optical experiments
What to expect:
At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies (DLR-QT) in Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aviation, digitalization, energy, security and transport. Together with the DLR Institute of Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing (SI) in Hannover and the DLR Galileo Competence Center (GK) in Oberpfaffenhofen, we play a pioneering role in quantum technology research and application fields. The research work of our four core departments Quantum Metrology, Quantum Information and Communication, Quantum Nanophysics and Electromagnetic Quantum Sensors is complemented and supported by the three cross-sectional departments Quantum Engineering, Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems and Theoretical Quantum Physics. We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation.
The Quantum Metrology department (QT-QME) focuses on the development of quantum metrology instruments suitable for space, particularly with regard to their necessary compactness, reliability and robustness. In order to achieve high measurement accuracies, laser measurement technologies are used, for example to realize iodine and resonator-based frequency references, optical frequency combs and laser interferometers. The instruments are used, for example, in earth observation, navigation and scientific missions.
Become part of our team and bring optical technologies into space with us!
Your contribution includes the following tasks:
  • You will design quantum optical instruments, in particular optical clocks and laser interferometers, and implement them in the laboratory.
  • You characterize these setups and document the tests.
  • You will support our team in the implementation of an iodine-based frequency reference for use on the ISS.
  • You will work on the compactification/miniaturization of quantum optical clocks and support the further development with regard to commercial implementation.
  • You will publish papers and scientific contributions and present them at conferences and congresses, for example.
What we expect from you:
  • completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma University) in natural sciences (e.g. physics) or engineering (e.g. in the fields of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering) or other courses of study relevant to the position
  • PhD in experimental physics or engineering sciences desirable
  • willingness to work in a team of scientists and technicians
  • knowledge of CAD and FEM software (SOLIDWORKS, Ansys or COMSOL)
  • experience in the development of optical metrology systems and ideally in optical technologies for space applications
  • experience in systems engineering of space projects desirable
  • very good IT skills such as MS-Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • sound knowledge of written and spoken English and German
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
Further information:
Starting date: 01.12.2024
