Scientific activity / project work
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute of Technical Thermodynamics in Aachen we are looking for a
Physicist, Engineer energy technology, control engineering or similar (f/m/x)
Scientist for innovative fuel cell systems in aviation technology
What to expect:
The Institute of Technical Thermodynamics at DLR conducts research with over 200 employees in the field of efficient and resource-saving energy storage and converters.
The research group fundamentals of electrochemical systems investigates fuel cell systems for aviation applications through laboratory experiments and simulation. Through our interdisciplinary research and development work, we enhance the performance of fuel cell systems for future generations of aircraft. Current aircraft use conventional power converters for propulsion and electrical power supply. This will change in the future as part of the transition to electric flight. A major challenge is the development of lightweight and efficient fuel cell systems.
As part of your work, you will develop new methods for the design and characterisation of liquid-cooled PEM fuel cell systems for small aircraft. To this end, you will develop system requirements based on the aircraft design and on current fuel cell technologies. Building on this, you will derive next-generation system architectures and analyse their performance at system level using Airfox, an internal DLR design and simulation tool for aircraft fuel cell systems. You will validate component models by collecting experimental data. Your innovative system architectures will lay the foundation for the electrification and automation of future small aircraft.
You will benefit from existing expertise and infrastructure, contributing to its continuous development within your role. If you bring the necessary level of personal responsibility and share our high standards for the scientific quality of your work, we offer you the ideal environment for personal and professional development at an internationally high level.
The place of work is Würselen.
What we expect from you:
  • completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in natural sciences (e.g. specialising in physics) or engineering (e.g. in the fields of energy technology, control engineering, aerospace engineering) or other degree programmes relevant to the position
  • experience in the development and engineering implementation of numerical methods (research software) for the design of energy systems in mobile applications
  • experience in the use of relevant programming languages and software tools (Python, Labview, etc.)
  • experience and knowledge of fuel cell technology
  • knowledge of electrical and thermodynamic energy systems
  • knowledge of aircraft design processes
  • personal and social skills for cooperative collaboration in research projects
  • strong analytical and systemic thinking skills
  • solution-orientated approach
  • confident oral and written communication skills
  • very good knowledge of English
Your Start Look forward to fulfilling work with an employer who values your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure provides you with a working environment where you have unparalleled opportunities to unfold your creative ideas and achieve your professional goals. We place great value on a healthy work-life balance and contemporary work-life flexibility, as well as equal opportunities for people of all genders (m/f/x).
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
