For our Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven we are looking for a

Development of methods for muon imaging based object detection and classification

The Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures is devoted to fortifying the security of our maritime world through innovation and technology. We're on the lookout for passionate minds to join us on this exciting journey!
Within our Maritime Security Technologies department, we're diving deep into technological advancements aimed at protecting maritime infrastructures. We're set on crafting systems that assess and visualize the status of these infrastructures, ensuring their security efficiently and effectively.
One of our main focuses within the Methods and Processing group is muon tomography. Muon tomography relies on ambient cosmic-rays to image the inside of objects. We're collaborating to pioneer tomographic scanning technology tailored specifically for maritime applications using considering both ambient muons as well as artificial muon sources. This work will lay the foundation for future prototype developments. Our goal is to develop novel tomographic reconstruction algorithms and integrate state-of-the-art machine learning techniques for precise object detection and classification.
As our new team colleague, you'll be at the forefront of this innovation, focusing on:
  • investigating, designing and implementing low and high-flux tomographic reconstruction methods using muons in C++/ROOT and Python
  • exploring advanced data-analysis techniques for shipping container content categorization using secondary particle information
  • designing, implementing and optimizing anomaly detection algorithms for identifying rare events in maritime scenarios using simulated muon source data
  • comparing the performance of anomaly detection methods between cosmic-ray and artificial muon data through statistical analysis
Additionally, you'll contribute to publishing research in esteemed journals, presenting findings at conferences, and potentially supervising student theses and internships.
What we expect from you:
  • completed scientific university degree (Master's degree / university diploma) in natural sciences (e.g. physics), engineering sciences (e.g. computer science) or other degree programmes relevant to the job
  • programming skills (for instance in C/C++ and Python and preferably also in ROOT)
  • experience in data analysis and Monte Carlo modelling (ideally with Geant4)
  • experience in experimental physics through working in a research collaboration
  • strong analytical skills and a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • good to very good command of the English language
