Studien-/ Abschlussarbeit Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place! For our Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen we are looking for Master Student Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or similar (f/m/x) Determine LDACS Datalink requirements for wake vortex riding procedures What to expect: Civil aviation is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, necessitating the development of novel technologies aimed at mitigating its impact on climate change. One of those new technologies shall be wake vortex riding, which aims at reducing fuel use by using the upwash generated by a preceding aircraft. To ensure safe operation of these procedures a secure communication protocol for aircraft engaged in wake vortex riding is essential. This communication protocol shall be the L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System (LDACS), a modern broadband, digital data link for aeronautical communications. However, the Air-to-Air protocol is at its infancy.
You will help shaping the LDACS A/A security protocol by establishing communication link requirements essential for wake vortex riding procedures, considering factors such as throughput, latency, communication range, cybersecurity, and integration with flight procedures. By doing so, you will contribute to fuel savings in civil aviation, thereby enhancing the environmental sustainability of the aviation sector. You will gather information from literature on wake vortex riding and flight procedures in civil aviation and combine this knowledge to estimate requirements for communication links used for different stages of wake vortex riding. We encourage you to validate your results in a simulation.
What we expect from you:
