Master Student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering (f/m/x)
Performance implications of software fault mitigation techniques
What to expect:
Space is a harsh environment for electronic devices. One of the reasons for that is radiation, which can cause single event effects (SEEs), for example bitflips, among other things. That is especially important when using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices instead of radiation-hard devices, which has become more and more popular in the recent years, for cost and performance reasons. This does not only affect the devices on a hardware level, of course it also interferes with the software running on this devices.
For that reason, different software-based fault mitigation techniques have been developed over the years, popular ones are for example EDACs, Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR), Lockstep-Mechanisms or Checkpointing. They all cause some kind of overhead, which influences what use-case they can be applied to and how they influence other parts of the system. In order to evaluate the different techniques, it is necessary to be able to measure and compare the performance of different approaches.
The goal of this thesis is to investigate the performance implications of those mechanisms. This includes:
  • defining which performance metrics are applicable and useful in this context
  • researching and evaluating ways to measure the performance metrics
  • designing and implementing a framework to measure those metrics in an embedded software environment
  • conducting performance measurements with at least two different mitigation techniques
  • writing a Master's thesis
What we expect from you:
  • master's student in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or similar
  • interest in embedded software and research
  • experience with C++ and GNU/Linux
  • experience in embedded development is an advantage
  • experience with performance measuring or fault mitigation is an advantage
  • You are able to communicate in English. (Supervision can be in English or German.)
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular.
