In 2025, we will launch the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new, independent cloud for Europe, designed to help public sector organizations and customers in highly regulated industries meet their evolving sovereignty needs. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will provide customers the capability to meet stringent operational autonomy and data residency requirements.
Currently we are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as AWS Director and Managing Director of AWS European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) GmbH, driving our ambitious €7.8 billion investment in European digital sovereignty, coupled with a leading role in AWS worldwide digital sovereignty efforts. This pivotal role will shape the future of cloud computing in Europe while ensuring AWS maintains its position as the most trusted cloud provider for government, healthcare, highly regulated industries, and critical infrastructure operators across Europe.
This role is based in Germany.
Key job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities are organized into two areas:
The first responsibility is to serve as the Operational Leader and Legal Representative of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud GmbH. In this capacity you will be the accountable leader to:
• Drive strategic planning and execution of AWS's sovereign cloud initiatives across the EU
• Lead high-stakes engagements with ministerial-level government officials and C-suite executives
• Oversee compliance needs for national security schemes and certification requirements
• Direct technical business development strategy aligned with European sovereignty requirements, as well as partner with product management and engineering teams to influence product strategy
• Own delivery to the European Sovereign Cloud Business P&L
• Build and maintain strategic partnerships with key European stakeholders
• Ensure operational independence and compliance with EU data residency requirements.
The second responsibility is to serve as the Global Leader for AWS digital sovereignty solutions in our AWS commercial regions worldwide. In this capacity you will be the accountable leader to:
• Drive AWS's worldwide digital sovereignty strategy and positioning
• Collaborate with AWS worldwide sales leaders to meet evolving worldwide customer requirements for digital sovereignty
• Work with AWS product management and services leadership to develop solutions to respond to customer needs
• Create scalable, programmatic approaches to meeting varying national digital sovereignty requirements
• Substantial executive-level leadership experience in European technology business development
• Proven track record of P&L management at scale
• Extensive experience engaging with C-suite executives and government officials
• Fluency in English; additional European languages preferred
• EU citizenship and residency required
• Deep understanding of European regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements
• Track record of successful large-scale technology implementations in regulated industries and government
This position requires successful completion of a background check and security clearances appropriate for the role's responsibilities.
• Fluency in German
• Experience in national security, defense, or critical infrastructure sectors
• Strong background in cloud computing or enterprise technology
• History of successful public-private partnership development
Advanced degree in relevant field (Business, Technology, Law)
• Demonstrated success in policy advocacy and stakeholder management
