DESY expands its research on novel plasma-based accelerator technologies for future applications in health, photon science, and particle physics. Ultrafast laser technology is one of the key enabling technologies for these activities.DESY just started the development of a next-generation laser-plasma electron accelerator to demonstrate seeding of DESYs PETRA III synchrotron ligh source. For this project we are looking for an experienced laser scientist to join our international laser development team.
- Development of kW-level femtosecond-laser systems to drive new generation laser-plasma accelerators
- Evaluation and implementation of an integrative pump-laser architecture
- Designing novel concepts for laser-cooling using simulations and experiments
- Implement passive and fast-active stabilisation
- Operate a 100TW class laser and participate in laser-plasma experiments
- Documentation, reporting and publication of the scientific results
- Supervision of students and mutual support with the other teams of the group

Limited: 2 years
- Ph.D. in physics or laser physics or equivalent qualification
- Experiences with developing high-power solid-state lasers
- In-depth knowledge of non-linear optics and pulse propagation at high peak intensities is of great advantage
- Comprehensive experiences with laser instrumentation and hardware is essential
- Experience with common scientific software (e.g., CAD, Python, Matlab, Zemax)
- Motivated and talented with a strong preference for team work
- Very good written and spoken English skills, German skills are considered a bonus
