Engineer III, CFD

Summary:
This part-time position assists hydraulic engineers by analyzing new and existing components using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Structural Analysis (FEA). The engineer will also perform R&D numerical studies designed to improve accuracy, function as an expert for non-standard calculations, test new software products, and provide system administration. This position also encompasses all tasks associated with operating the Numerical Test Stand, including organizing and documenting results, preparing reports, managing files, and analyzing data.
Responsibilities:
- Provide support and system administration for High-speed computing cluster running on Linux
- Suggest hardware/software improvements and modify/create hardware/software to implement them.
- Complete all non-standard CFD calculations from start to finish
- Use ANSYS CFX pre-processing software to setup domains and apply boundary conditions.
- Assist Hydraulic Engineers with standard and non-standard CFD calculations.
- Report on results from numerical studies and correlations.
Required Skills/Abilities (Example – modify as necessary):
- Ability to read and understand manufacturing drawings.
- Post-process results using ANSYS CFD Post, CEI Ensight, Tecplot, and in-house software to creatively show flow fields and stress fields.
- Be able to recognize erroneous solutions.
- Use Windows and Linux operating systems and programs proficiently.
- 3-D geometry generation using Unigraphics for complicated surfacing and/or solid-body modeling.
- Using creativity and 3-D thinking as well as specialized software (ANSYS ICEM CFD) to fit blocked grids into intricate geometries while keeping CFD Best Practice angles, aspects, expansion rates and volumes.
- Calculate boundary conditions using similitude and non-dimensional parameters for both model and prototype size CFD calculations.
- 3-D Grid generators for both Flow and Stress Analysis
- Thorough understanding of fluid dynamics and turbo machinery
- A solid background in computer skills, including PC applications, CAD and CAE tools
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Education and Experience (Example – modify as necessary):
- BS Degree in mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering or another appropriate discipline.
- MS or PhD degree strongly preferred.
- Thorough understanding of turbo machinery and CFD analysis in the context of hydro turbine design
Physical Requirements (Office Example – modify as necessary):
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
