Engineer for PETRA III/IV Sample Environment Instrumentation

Unlimited | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSMA030/2024 | Deadline: 07.10.2024 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

DESY is developing PETRA IV, the ultimate X-ray microscope for nano research with outstanding potential for industrial users and societally relevant applications in energy research, information technology, mobility, environment and medicine. PETRA IV will provide the highest resolution for experiments on relevant length, time and energy scales with all possibilities for in-situ/operando analysis. At the same time, a new business model is being developed, which includes a new and innovative operating model for the user community, with a comprehensive service concept that involves laboratories and sample environments.

The Sample Environment Team supports the PETRA III and future PETRA IV beamlines with infrastructure and designs, builds and operates scientific equipment in corporation with scientists, engineers and technicians. The team develops complex sample environments for highly stable ln-situ & operando X-ray applications within interdisciplinary research projects.

For the development of highly stable sample environments for cryogenic applications, our team is looking for a motivated engineer with a sound knowledge in the field of cryogenics who enjoys developing new and creative solutions in an international environment.

About your role:

  • Design, construction and commissioning of technical instrumentation for challenging PETRA IV beamline requirements in collaboration with beamline teams, such as the design and development of an automated sample exchange system for cryogenic applications
  • Concepts for standardisation of highly stable in-situ & operando X-ray experiments with focus on cryogenics
  • Integration of the newly developed concepts, tools and equipment into the new PETRA IV Business and Access Model
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.
