Job description

The project ‘Strengthening the socio-economic participation of refugees and the host population in north-west Uganda’ aims to provide support for communities hosting refugees as well as for refugees themselves and refugee organisations. The host communities are located primarily in the districts of Obongi and Adjumani, in the West Nile region. The creation of social cohesion and citizen participation, particularly given the challenges caused by climate change, are the main concern. Uganda has an internationally recognised refugee policy, which the project works to promote and implement in practice.

  • Dedicated cooperation with local partners and organisations to develop and implement solutions on a joint basis
  • Planning and implementing cultural and sporting events to foster exchange and understanding between refugees and the local population
  • Coordinating training courses and workshops to promote the intercultural skills of all participants
  • Supporting and cooperating with (local and national) partner organisations
  • Advising the local partner on the monitoring and evaluation of measures
  • Taking on tasks in an intercultural team
Your profile
  • University degree in social sciences, political science, anthropology, psychology or similar field, as well as initial professional experience
  • Experience working in an intercultural context, ideally in cooperation with refugees or host communities
  • Experience in promoting refugee integration and participation, ideally in cooperation with local communities, is desirable
  • Highly skilled at working together with different stakeholders
  • Able to work independently, and in a structured and creative manner
  • Excellent moderation, presentation and communication skills
  • Business fluency in English
Location information

We are pleased to offer you a first impression on topics such as climate, shopping and services, the school situation and health care in Uganda.

The holder of this position will operate in the medium-sized centres in the district capitals of Obongi and Adjumani in the West Nile region, and will live and work there. Regular business trips to the surrounding larger cities (Gulu, Arua and Kampala, the capital) are envisaged. Basic medical care is guaranteed, with a good selection of medical facilities available in Kampala in particular. In the event of a complicated medical emergency, however, care would need to be provided abroad (either in Kenya or Germany). The climate is tropical. The supply situation on the ground is limited to essentials although the larger medium-sized centres – within an hour’s drive – have a decent range of goods. Regular trips are made to the capital Kampala in order to replenish supplies, including foreign products. There are no (international) schools in the assignment locations, although local options are available for smaller children of per-school age.
