The Colo Operations Support Chief Engineer will be responsible for the colo launch readiness programme for their assigned Clusters within EMEA. The Colo Operations Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring AWS operational standards are met in new data centres prior to handover to the local AWS operations team who will then manage and operate the site. This includes all critical equipment (electrical, mechanical, fire/life safety), support infrastructure (control, monitoring, admin.) and operational processes. The Colo Operations Support Chief Engineer serves as an expert technical resource responsible for setting clear expectations with internal AWS teams and colo/hybrid service providers. They provide crucial operations input from initial site selection, design, construction up to site launch. They coach and support local AWS operations teams to ensure consistent standards are maintained across their region in line with global standards. They work with global teams to develop standard colo and hybrid operations processes and work across regions to establish global alignment. The role will require up to 25% travel within EMEA. Key job responsibilities- Provide operations input to Data Center Supply Solutions team to support site selection decision for colo and hybrid sites. - Provide operations input at design review stage, work closely with AWS Colo Regional Engineering, Security and partner teams to assess site, identify risks and translate into operational outputs. - Single threaded operations owner for early stage of new site launch to ensure operations considerations are included in construction and handover process. - Standardisation of operations colo and hybrid launch processes, systems and tools. - Set clear consistent operations expectations with AWS teams and colo providers. - Support local operations team in preparation for new colo or hybrid launch.- Coach local AWS operations teams including DCEO chief engineers and managers in site launch requirements.- Own colo and hybrid launch readiness programme for assigned Clusters.- Communicate colo operational readiness status concisely to operations leaderships on a regular basis and work with operations teams to ensure teams are set up for new site operation. - Subject matter expert in Data Center critical infrastructure (electrical and/or mechanical systems)- Establish performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of the critical facility operations and maintenance on colo and hybrid colo sites.- Deep dive design and operational documentation and systems in colo sites including: switch-gear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, fire and life safety systems. - Work with business leaders to coordinate projects, manage capacity, and optimize safety, performance, reliability and efficiency- Participates in strategic planning projects.- Participates in recruiting efforts.- Is active in the training and/or development of others.- Respond to out of hour’s emergency calls – second level escalation point for Data Centre facilities related issues / failures.About the teamAWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure.
