Then this is your place! For our Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen we are looking for Bachelor Thesis Student Aerospace Engineering or similar (f/m/x) Define margins for takeoff times, separation flying distances, and more for formation flying What to expect: Civil aviation is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, necessitating the development of novel technologies aimed at mitigating its impact on climate change. One of those new technologies shall be wake vortex riding, which aims at reducing fuel use by using the upwash generated by a preceding aircraft.
You will help shaping formation flying procedures by establishing requirements on flight procedures, enroute speed, separation distances and airport regulations necessary to perform wake vortex riding procedures. By doing so, you will contribute to fuel savings in civil aviation, thereby enhancing the environmental sustainability of the aviation sector. You will gather information from literature on wake vortex riding and flight procedures in civil aviation and combine this knowledge to estimate margins for takeoff times, formation flying distances, separation times and route distances for determining the feasibility of formation flying in various scenarios. You may choose to validate your results in a simulation.
